Catching the Ferry captures the essence of my teenage experience of a daily commute across the Derwent River in Hobart, Tasmania. Every day, I would peer down into the profound, ink-like blackness beneath me. The depths of the river held an irresistible allure, stirring my adolescent imagination with the mystery of the unseen below. Sometimes I would spot a school of fish at the water's edge, and other times it was just floating kelp. The river's profound depth symbolized an enigmatic world, a reflection of the mysteries of adolescence itself. As the ferry ventured into the middle of the river, the wind on my face brought an exhilarating sense of freedom. The expansive waters surrounding me, coupled with the rush of wind, created a liberating experience that contrasted with the depth-induced mystery of the river. The play of sunlight on the saltwater and the sounds of seagulls singing their song in the air further contributed to the sensory richness of those remembered experiences.
